Why I Became a Chiropractor

My journey to chiropractic actually began long before I ever considered it as a career.

While I was in college, my sister was having some health issues and began seeing a chiropractor. Before long, the rest of my family was going too. I didn't have any particular problems myself, but I started going because I was interested in the idea of chiropractic as part of maintaining wellness.

What really caught my attention was the philosophy behind chiropractic. The idea that the nervous system plays such an important role in coordinating and regulating the body made sense to me. I was fascinated by the relationship between the spine and nervous system and by the idea that the way the nervous system functions can influence how the body moves, adapts, and works as a whole.

At the time, I was still undecided about what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I wanted a career involving the human body because I found it fascinating, but I knew I didn't want to go into surgery. Physical therapy was one of the possibilities I was considering.

Then one day, my chiropractor asked me what I was going to school for.

I told him I wasn't sure yet, and we talked about my interest in the human body and physical therapy. He said something that really stuck with me. He essentially asked me why I would want to spend my days working with people who were already struggling when I could practice chiropractic in a wellness setting and work with people who were interested in staying healthy and functioning well.

That conversation shined a light on chiropractic as a profession. Until then, I had never really considered becoming a chiropractor. Suddenly, I could see how something I was already fascinated by — the human body and nervous system — could become a career centered around helping people stay healthy, active, and well.

That realization led me to Life University and ultimately to a career in chiropractic.

More than 28 years later, that original perspective still influences the way I practice. I love that chiropractic gives me the opportunity to work with people who want to be proactive about their health, understand how their bodies function, and maintain their ability to do the things that matter to them.

That's a big part of why I created Wellness Within Chiropractic.

My Approach to Chiropractic

My approach to chiropractic has been shaped by my own experience as a chiropractic patient and by what I have learned throughout my career. I was first introduced to chiropractic as a college student, when I began receiving care for wellness rather than because I had a specific problem I was trying to solve. That experience shaped the way I came to view chiropractic and continues to influence the way I practice today.

I was drawn to the idea that chiropractic care could be about more than addressing a problem. It could be part of taking an active role in maintaining health and function throughout life.

I don't believe there is a single approach to chiropractic care that is right for everyone. Every person is different, and I believe their care should reflect that. I use a variety of gentle chiropractic techniques, including Diversified, Thompson, Activator, and SOT, and adapt my approach based on the individual.

I also believe people deserve to understand why they're receiving the care they're receiving. Whenever possible, I want my patients to leave my office with a better understanding of their bodies and with practical ways to participate in their own health.

For me, chiropractic is ultimately about helping people stay connected to what their bodies are capable of doing — so they can continue to move, participate, contribute, and enjoy the things that make life meaningful.
